On Diabetes

On Diabetes
"Nature I" by Allison L. Williams Hill

(Written November 2013-Allison L. Williams Hill)

The Center for Disease Control predicts that by the year 2050 one in three people will have diabetes, not pre-diabetes but diabetes.

A study published in Pediatrics magazine contained the statistic for pre-diabetes and diabetes of 12- 19 year olds in the years 1999-2000 and 2007-2008.  In the former year’s study, 9% of the juveniles had either pre-diabetes or diabetes.  The latter year had an increase to 23%.  The body weight of some subjects has not increased but their pre-diabetes or diabetes condition did.

Diabetes can cause amputation; hearing loss; blindness; some people won’t get the message until it actually happens to them.    Currently, 25% of people over 65 have diabetes. However, this may be the first generation of young people affected to such a degree that will not outlive their parents.

Type I diabetes, which is an auto immune disease, is increasing and showing up at earlier ages. But Dr. Sue Kirkland of the American Diabetes Association stated in an interview aired on PRI in 2012 that the difference between sugar and high fructose corn syrup is only the amount used in processed foods. She said the amount of fructose in sugar and HFCS is the same, and that chemically they are the same.  My research has shown something completely different.  You can find the article I wrote called “High Fructose Corn Syrup: Avoid It.”  Your body certainly realizes a difference when the substance is inside of you.
It costs $179 billion dollars per year to support people with this disease.  That amount is 20% of total health care dollars.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, between 1995 and 2010 the United States had increase of 6% to 10% of diagnosed cases of diabetes.  By 2010, about 18 million Americans were diagnosed with it.  The number of people developing this disease is growing.

Children and Food Consumption
Some parents are quick to blame Congress and blame the manufacturers, and schools installing vending machines with non-nutritious products.  All of the three – Congress, the schools, and vending suppliers - can benefit from the parents’ direct involvement.

This world is not filled with orphaned children.  However, which is worse: children without parents or children who have parents who do not discipline them and instill values?  A friend mentioned a public school teacher’s idea to bring the parent-teacher conference to where the parents were: in a nightclub.  They were there with their children.   Adults were there getting their social on, the same people who thought they should be their children’s friends.   He said his mother told him when he was growing up that she was not his friend, she was his mother, his parent.

Some have raised the possibility of ceasing support of foods that contribute to diabetes development.  Families receiving food stamps would be forbidden to use them to purchase carbonated beverages, a product that does not contribute to the consumer’s health.   It may not be that simple: the products that encourage bulk purchases are highly processed and contribute least to a consumer’s health.

What Would It Take To Change This?
The first obvious rule is: Eat Less; Exercise More.  Five to 7% weight loss 60% of the time can prevent people from becoming pre-diabetic or diabetic.

Food marketing is strong, all stops are pulled to get you to buy, buy, BUY!!! Make smart moves with your money.  Know that corporations pay to occupy certain shelves in a store’s aisles.  In addition to ads on television, on Internet and in printed media, food shelves are also advertising. Average eye level height shelf level costs more because most people will see those products. Read label contents.  Besides white sugar, understand the “hidden ingredients” that are actually sugar like other sugar cane products like cane juice and cane syrup; corn syrup; high fructose corn syrup; the “ose” family -dextrose; lactose; maltose, and sucrose, and fruit juice concentrates.
